CD Trustee On The Web
Introduction

You already use and love CD Trustee* for cataloging your music collection, right? If you have version 2, you might also be saving the reports it generates as HTML pages and displaying them on your website. That's certainly a simple and convenient way of getting your music collection on the Web, but let's face it. It has its limitations, like keeping track of hundreds of Web pages, depending on the type of display you choose.

Are you interested in taking the Web display of your music collection to a higher level? If so, read on. I've written some scripts** for your CD Trustee database with the following features:

  • Pages that display artist, album and format for selected genres and artists.

  • Hyperlinks to lists of albums by each artist.

  • Hyperlinks to albums, which display their track listing.

  • A new arrivals page that automatically refreshes itself.

  • A database search page that lets visitors find items by artist, album, song or composer. Visitors can also browse by those same categories.

  • When your database changes all you have to do is upload the new database to the Web server, and all pages that utilize your database are automatically refreshed.

If this sounds like something you'd like to incorporate into your own website, start taking notes because I'll take you step by step through the setup process.

Just a few more comments before we begin. The scripts here are given freely and without warranty. I don't ask for much in return. Don't turn around and sell my scripts for money, as that will be a violation of the terms of use.

Feel free to customize them any way you like for your website. I do not require a link back; however, if you like my scripts and use them I would appreciate it if you would include a link to my site. If you choose not to do that, enjoy the scripts nonetheless. At the very least, be the first to drop me a line with a link to your site, as I would like to build a page with links to sites that use my scripts. Thanks!

That said, let's get started.

* You can get a trial version of CD Trustee here, which lets you add up to 30 recordings to your database. Buy it and the 30 recording restriction is lifted.

** These scripts are now available in both ASP and PHP. If you know which set of scripts you want to use, you can go straight to that tutorial from here. Otherwise, you might want to read the introductory material for both and decide which one works best for you.
